Graphic Design

After studying graphic design for a year at the Academy of Art College (now University) in San Francisco, I channeled my collegiate path away from art, eventually graduating from Santa Clara University with a B.A. in Philosophy. Despite ending my formal study of graphic design, I continued to take on occasional projects from a few clients. A selection of these projects are presented below in reverse chronological order.

Flyer
Vermont Journal of Environmental Law
2009
This poster for the Vermont Journal of Environmental Law's annual symposium was designed to be printed on 8.5" x 11" paper with a 1/4" margin on each side. Print run was full-color.

I designed the artwork, selected the fonts, and wrote the copy at the bottom. The logo above the date was provided by another designer.

Book Cover
South Bay Writers Club Anthology
2009

At left are images for both the front and back covers of the South Bay Writers Club Anthology. The book was printed at 6.25" x 9.5" with a full bleed.

I designed the layout, selected the fonts, and took the photograph for the front and back cover. The text was provided.

Poster
Vermont Law Review
2008
Designed for black and white at 11" x 17", this poster needed to have maximum legibility from a distance and be reproducible inexpensively. The organizers and I collaborated on the copy.

Calendar
Nancy Bocian, Personal Financial Services
2005

I designed this 2006 calendar in late 2005 with carte blanche from the client. I chose the theme, the Almaden Quicksilver mines, because my client's own client base was largely in Almaden Valley in San Jose. I located and selected the images and arranged their licensing for the calendar. I created the layout, chose the color scheme, chose the fonts, designed the artwork except for the dingbats, and composed the copy or adapted it from source materials.

The print run for this calendar was 2000 full-color copies.

Christmas Card
Nancy Bocian, Personal Financial Services
2005

The client wanted a Christmas greeting card to mail to her own client base. Following in the calendar's Almaden Quicksilver theme, this greeting card was designed to be printed in black and white at 8" x 5.5" and folded in half. I located and selected the image and arranged its licensing for the greeting card. I selected the font, composed the copy, and designed the background and layout. The print run was 500 copies.

Flyer
Alison Bocian, Real Estate Agent
2005
For this flyer advertising a real-estate listing, I took the photographs and created the layout. The text in the lower left was provided as-is.

Event Program Cover, Name Tag, Play Money
Asilomar Redux 2005
2005

For the Asilomar Redux 2005 event, I was asked to design the program cover, the name tags, and the four denominations of play money. The client wanted a "duck" theme to the program materials and otherwise imposed no design specifications.

I designed the cover layout, chose the fonts, and created the dingbats and vector artwork. The play money was designed to appear the same when viewed upside-down.
